Cannot recommended this book highly enough. James and Dianne Murphy present an intelligent, powerful and research-evidenced call for the illiteracy/semi literacy of thousands of students to end. The book is full of wisdom, years of experience and observation compressed into an analysis of why education has paid insufficient attention to assessment and teaching of struggling secondary students.

This is a thought-provoking book about young people who have reached secondary school and are unable to read fluently, and about what teachers and school leaders can do to help improve attainment, confidence and life-chances.I especially like the policy section, where the Murphys advocate for development of reading skills as a high priority in every subject; at risk students to be systematically identified; students to be withdrawn from any subject for reading intervention; and an unwavering determination that all students leave school as fluent readers.

This is excellent on a number of levels. Dianne and James have distilled a wealth of experience into this short work, making it highly informative for teachers of all levels of experience. Their knowledge of the latest research in this key field is unsurpassed. I particularly enjoyed the third chapter on how we learn to read, and the fifth chapter aimed at school leaders is essential. This works very well alongside other recent key works on reading and literacy by Kenny Pieper and Alex Quigley, as well as Dan Willingham's 'The Reading Mind'. If you've covered those four, you're covered.

Obviously I’m biased because I wrote the foreword to the book but still, this is most accessible, most practical guide for teachers on teaching older children to read.
